February 2010

As the young ones say, "OMG" what a tough January!....

Recent Project - Front garden transformation

The owners of this Hartsville home wanted to increase the density of their front garden, as well as use plants and shrubs that looked good all year round. The Yard Barber suggested and incorporated oleander, tea olives, liriope, pineapple guava trees, abelia and loropetalum.

Before: Old, tired boxwoods.

Before: A few tired boxwoods and not much else.

After: More color and density.

After: More color, more density, and ease of maintenance.

The finished project is quite a transformation. The boxwoods are gone! Foliage now is higher density with a variety of shades of green. The oleander will have pink flowers in season, and color will remain all year round. Several unused large pots were incorporated for visual interest. The pineapple guava trees on each side of the entrance door will bloom with pink and white flowers in the spring.

The trees can be trimmed like topiary, so they do not overpower the entrance. The variegated liriope was used to accent the border and will remain a very manageable size. It blooms with delicate lavendar flower stalks.

This project was completed in one day, and the owners are VERY pleased with the results.
